Shutting the whole (damn) world out (for awhile)
58This planet will be turning
when I awake.
All of the people who walk this earth
have not gone away.
My problems and anxieties still exist.
Certain things will always remain the same
and yet as I drift,
the many pressures of the blues
are put.
temporarily,
on hold.
The sun will rise
and the sun will set.
The waves shall always return to shore.
The birds will fly
and the wind will blow
but I am going discreetly to the sleep of the dead
and I'm shutting the whole damn world out.
Deep,
I'll wander
where no one will find me.
Deep,
I'll reach the apex of my dreams.
Deep,
as a fugitive of this lovely repose
I know there's a place that I can escape
away from the ringing cellphone
without the sustenance of food,
the buffer of alcohol
or a bathroom break
when I open my eyes
for I am going discreetly to the sleep of the dead
and I'm shutting the whole damn world out!
So it's goodbye Ma
and it's goodbye Pa.
So long to my kids and their puberty.
Good luck to my wife with her menopause.
No time for you my nagging boss.
I'm blowing this pop stand for awhile
and getting out of Dodge when the timing is good
until the alarm goes off
and I hit the snooze button
as I go back indiscreetly
to the sleep of the dead
and I'm shutting this whole damn world out
.... for a few more minutes!

lol Night Night Epi Sweet Dreams...
I want the sleep of the dead! My sleep is often interrupted by my own menopause and the laughter of a two year old grandson when he is visiting...(Ok...I would love to sleep during the menopause, but NEVER during the little one's visits!)
Voted up and awesome as always, Epi! (and SHARING!)
wow I feel like that so many times.. LOL. you read my mind. get some rest and come back strong.. I need more of your writing.
Blessing to you
Debbie
Sweetest of dreams, Epi! Lucky you! Me? I'm stuck here wide awake dealing with this god damned menopause! LOL
How freaking cool is this?! . You were taking me down a grim path, and stayed with me until we got to a clearing where laughter filled the air, and the rock ‘n roll played. Only you can pull this off, the way you do my friend!
jim
Ah, epi- so well put! I look forward to that sweet respite with my dear cat alongside.
Sleep is a necessary time to refuel your energy. When I am exhausted I cannot think straight.
So you want more deep sleep, Epi, even into the day?
Then get up and throw that alarm clock far, far away.
Yes! Damn the man. To hell with the alarm clocks. Roam unfettered the land of dreams, where freedom reigns and Epi rules!
It's nice when you can control the alarm clock and make that great escape back into la-la land yeah?
You better wake up!! Miss Tiffy is licking up your coffee cup! Lol! Ranting is well done after you have dreamt of that sexy blonde!
LORD
for clues, just look to booze
you chose, to snooze
your muse, has news
Yep - Sleep is a Bless!
Sweet dreams, Epi!
We've all been there at some point. Great poem. Voted up
I was worried there for a minute! LOL. You just want to snooze a few more minutes!
I know the feeling of wanting to sleep and not wake up. You turned that thought into a beautiful poem.
Thank you Epi man for waking each day and writing poems that help all of us to see reasons for living.
It´s 2.10. a m here and I´ve forgotten how to work out what time it is at Lake eerie. So I´ll just send you Blessings and hugs whatever time it is. xx
Sleep isn't all it's Cracked up to be...I should know for some nights this Brain of mine keeps going, and going and Going! Kinda of a Fun Dark Poem my Friend...But I LIKE it, so what does that make me...Tired but Happy!
Having a moment Colin. We've all been there. Why dont you just battle Tetris with me LOL
Hi Epi.
Sweet dreams and take the plug out of the alarm clock then there won't be a snooze alarm.
LOL Ghaelach
Boy this made me laugh. I know that feeling. When the stress hits the highest level good-night everyone. However don't forget that Miss Tiffy will be wanting her breakfast and some company. But if she's content to keep on sleeping much like my cat Sid then just put in some ear plugs. It's 11 AM in Riga and my article job kept me up till 4AM but since my inbox is overflowing who can sleep....
OMG...i really thought...oh, what the heck...i'll just smile it through...good morning Epi...but it's night here...
Loved it! I feel like that every morning when I have to wake up for work! I just wanna shut the whole world out for a few more minutes...hours really but I take what I can get. lol
Do not sleep too long, Epi - I love reading your poems. This one is probably what most people think every morning when they first awake.
When I first awake in the mornings I want to go back to sleep and dream those sweet dreams again -- off into far off lands of beauty.
Hi Colin; There's nothing like turning off the phone and getting a few extra minutes/hours sleep.
Well done, as usual,
Rob
You describe exactly how I feel every weekday morning! But Saturday I can just turn over and go back to sleep and sleep and sleep, great poem Epi as always :-)
Bell
It is such a luxury to get such good sleep. But, I am glad you did wake up and join us again. I love your work.
Hello Colin ~ Thinking of you and state as described. The internet has turned all of our world's upside down. Blessings, Debby
uh, good luck with that... that sleep thing can be illusive! Voted UP & Funny, dear epi!
Yes, I love it! I bought 7 alarm clocks on a sixteen week hitch, and hit them w/ a ballpeen hammer, just like the pink panther did. But enough of that you old poop. I've visited you three times, and no Epi, even while I had to make time to do so. You know how fragile I am... don't you? Happy Valentines just the same, your one of a kind... love yaz, lily
Brilliant as always epi;how nice it is to snuggle down just for a few more moments ;before sadly reality sets in.
Sorry though now Sir Epi you must arise!!!
Take care my dear friend and enjoy your day.
Eddy.
Epi, those times when the day (or night) has been a challenge to survive make one long for sleep. We always awake to face it again though and usually it is so much better than we remember. Sleep well friend and arise with another poem on your pen.
Hi Epi
It sure is nice to escape the real world through sleep even if it is only for a short while.
Voted up and away
Happy Valentine's day
Voted up happy V day :)
Happy Valentine Day Epi..Sweet dreams..
Epi, sleep sweetly then write some more beautiful poetry. "Let him sleep for in dreams we enter a world that is entirely our own." -Albus Dumbledore.
You have no idea how many times I have wanted to do this. Just close stuff up and take the day off and the week off too! Life can catch up on us and everyone wanting a piece of us. Life can be a pain. Please remember to have breaks and relax and sit back and kick off the shoes!
You be chillin' Colin! Have a relaxing day and a relaxing chilled week too! (Not to chilled as in cold chilled! Unless it's a beer! LOL!)
But then, when one wakes up after being dead for a couple of hours, problems look a bit easier to solve, or to ignore. Take care, Colin! Don't forget you are a precious friend for many all over the world and for me too.
I have been reading Chinese Poets from the early BCE's and have found this to be a common theme even for the poet who wanders off into nature to still his nerves...I feel this way alot...but I keep up with the effort and hope that one day I can either sit down and breath...or just pass away queitly...(When the time comes of course) Jamie
I can totally relate to this one. :)
OMGOSH, epigramman, have I been there! Love this; shutting everything and everyone out till the alarm goes off...perfect escapism of which I have been a prime suspect myself. This one is awesome!
